What to buy, how to size it, and how to wire it so it lasts.

UHMW vs. aluminum vs. plastic — pick the material first

UHMW (ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene) is what most side-by-side owners end up running. It's slick, so the machine slides over rock and logs instead of catching; it's quiet; and it takes a hit by deforming and springing back rather than denting or tearing. It's sold mainly in 1/4" and 3/8" thicknesses — 1/4" is plenty for trail and mud, 3/8" is the choice if you regularly high-center on rock. The trade-off is weight and cost: a full-belly UHMW plate for a full-size machine is genuinely heavy.

Aluminum is lighter for the same coverage and cheaper, and it's the traditional choice for A-arm guards and bolt-on frame armor. It does dent, gouge, and gradually wear thin where it drags, and it's noticeably louder — aluminum drums and screeches on rock where UHMW is silent. Steel shows up mostly in rock sliders and frame armor, where its weight buys real impact strength in a small piece. The factory plastic panels are a mud shield, not armor; treat them as the baseline you're replacing, not as protection you already have.

Full-belly plate first, then A-arm guards, then sliders

If you buy one piece, buy the full-belly skid plate. It's the surface that takes the weight of the machine every time you high-center, and it covers the expensive things — engine and clutch cases, the belt box, the transmission, and the fuel and brake lines routed along the floor. Coverage matters more than material here: a plate that stops short of the rear differential leaves the exact area that catches on a ledge exposed.

A-arm guards are next if you ride wooded or rocky trail. They shield the lower A-arms and, more importantly, the CV boots — a stick through a boot slings grease, packs the joint with grit, and turns into a clicking, failing axle a few rides later. Rock sliders / nerf bars come third: they protect the rocker panel and door area on off-camber contact and double as a step. On long-travel RZR XP and Turbo machines, trailing arm and radius rod guards are the specialist pieces that stop a rock from bending a rear link. Buy in that order and you cover the expensive failures first.

Oil-change access, drainage, and the details that decide if you'll keep it on

The single most under-considered feature is service access. A one-piece plate with no hatch means every oil change starts with dropping a heavy, awkward panel over your face — which in practice means the service gets skipped. Good plates cut an access hatch over the oil drain and filter, and the better ones open up the clutch cover drain too. If you're due anyway, do the armor install and the service in the same session with a complete oil change kit on the bench; the maintenance schedule lays out what's due at each hour interval.

Check for drain holes. A sealed pan holds water, mud, and sand against the frame and cases and becomes a rust and heat problem instead of a protection one. Check that the plate doesn't block airflow to the belt-box intake or the radiator path — a poorly cut plate that traps heat under the machine is a belt-life problem, covered in the cooling & overheating guide. And account for weight: a heavy full-armor build is like carrying a passenger everywhere, which shows up as a slightly lazier machine and more heat in the belt — worth a look at the drive belt guide if you're also running big tires.

Mounting: hardware is what fails, not the plate

Armor almost never breaks. What fails is the hardware — bolts back out under vibration and impact, and owners lose plates on the trail. Use the supplied grade-8 or stainless fasteners with thread locker, torque them evenly, and then re-torque after the first ride or two; that one check prevents most lost-plate stories. Prefer kits that mount to existing frame holes or nutserts in the frame rails over ones that rely on self-tappers into thin sheet.

Expect to pull plastic body panels and the factory belly trays to get at the mounting points, and expect to break a few of the nylon push pins doing it — they're one-use in practice and always brittle by the time you get there. Keep a bag of Polaris push pins and fender clips or a mixed body fastener and rivet kit on the shelf so a single brittle clip doesn't stall the install.
