What to buy, how to size it, and how to wire it so it lasts.
Size the winch to your loaded machine, not the sticker
The number that matters is your machine's fully loaded weight — curb weight plus cargo, gear, and passengers — and the rule most experienced owners follow is a winch rated at roughly 1.5x that figure. For most full-size Rangers and wide-body RZR XP/Turbo machines that lands around a 4,500 lb winch; a two-up Trail RZR or a Sportsman ATV can run a smaller 3,500–4,500 lb unit, while a heavily loaded Ranger CREW or a machine that regularly gets badly buried is worth stepping up to 5,000 lb or more.
Under-sizing is the classic mistake: a winch working near its limit pulls slowly, overheats, and drains the battery on long or muddy pulls. A slight over-size pulls the same load more slowly under less strain, runs cooler, and lasts longer. When in doubt, go one size up — you rig snatch blocks to increase power, but you can't make an undersized motor bigger. Synthetic rope vs. steel cable
Synthetic rope is what most side-by-side owners run today, and for good reason: it's far lighter, it stores much less energy under load so it won't whip dangerously if it ever fails, and it's easy to spool by hand. The trade-off is that it hates abrasion and UV — keep it clean, inspect it for fuzzing and cuts, and replace it before it frays through. Pair synthetic rope with a smooth hawse fairlead (a flat aluminum guide), never a roller fairlead, which will chew synthetic line.
Steel cable is tougher against sharp rock and cheaper up front, but it's heavy, it kinks and develops sharp burrs that cut hands, and it stores enough energy to be genuinely dangerous if it snaps. Steel uses a roller fairlead. For a UTV that mostly sees mud, sand, and trail, synthetic wins on safety and weight; steel only makes sense for constant rock-crawling abrasion on a budget.
Mounting, fairlead, and wiring it so it lasts
Most Polaris machines take a model-specific mounting plate that bolts to the frame — you do not always need a new bumper. A winch-ready front bumper adds protection and a cleaner integrated look, but a proper frame mount is the essential part; the plate has to match your exact model and year, so buy for the machine, not by eye.
Match the fairlead to the rope (hawse for synthetic, roller for steel) and mount it square so the line spools evenly. Wire the winch directly to the battery through its supplied solenoid/contactor with properly sized cable, and mount the contactor where it stays dry. The dash or handlebar control is where winches most often quit: a corroded switch or a stuck solenoid reads as "winch won't run" or "winch won't stop." A common, cheap fix for a dead or intermittent in-cab control is a replacement winch rocker switch (momentary DPDT, in/out) rather than a whole new winch. The recovery kit is half the system
A winch alone gets you about halfway. The gear that makes it actually work — and work safely — is the recovery kit: a tree-saver strap (so you can anchor to a trunk without killing it or damaging your line), a snatch block (routes the line to double your pulling power or change the pull angle around an obstacle), D-ring or soft shackles, heavy gloves, and a line damper to throw over the rope so a failure drops instead of flies.
None of it is optional if you ride alone or off cell coverage. A 4,500 lb winch with a snatch block effectively pulls like a much larger unit — which is another reason not to overspend on raw pull rating at the cost of the kit that multiplies it. Carry the winch controls and a spare in-line fuse with your trail-repair spares so a dead switch never ends the ride.

How do I take care of synthetic winch rope?

Watch for fuzzing, flat spots, glazing from heat, and cuts, and re-spool it under a little tension so it doesn't bury and pinch on the next pull. My winch won't run or won't stop — is the winch dead?
Not usually. The most common failure point is the in-cab control and the solenoid, not the motor. A corroded or worn winch rocker switch, a stuck solenoid or contactor, or a bad ground reads as a winch that won't run, runs only one direction, or won't shut off. Start by checking the switch, wiring, and solenoid before condemning the winch — a replacement momentary rocker switch or solenoid is a cheap fix compared to a new unit.
